Durness to achmelvich

We set off from the comfort of Sango sands campsite in Durness (having indulged in a morning shower as well as an evening one), and stopped at tourist information to fill in a few gaps on the long stretch of wilderness facing us on the map. Fully versed in the whereabouts of campsites, hostels and shops we set off aiming for Lochinver hostel and a touch of luxury for the night. The scenery just south of Durness was really stunning as we rolled through valleys sided by great peaks and lochs. Our first stop of the day was in Scourie for a pot of tea and a bowl of chips at the Scourie Hotel, where we met a very elderly and very friendly cat called Jesse who entertained us whilst we had our break and supervised us as we got ready to set off again.

After rolling on some more we stopped for lunch near a massive bridge around about Kylestrome/ Kylesku area where we had an incredible view of lochs and mountains.

From our late lunch onwards a day became a game of ploughing through the miles to reach lochinver. As we approached Loch Assynt we plodded our way up a spectacular climb which was followed by a most welcome sweepng descent down to Loch Assynt.

From this point we were hoping for a roll into Lochinver but the road was hill after hill. As we approached Lochinver we decided it was mild enough (and dry enough!) to camp so cycled an extra 3 miles up the coast to Achmelvich campsite - but this revealed even more hills!! We arrived at the campsite just off Achmelvich beach and quickly pitched the tent and cooked up curry for dinner before a well deserved sleep - we did 56 miles of cycling with 1359m of ascent.
